Challenging Senate Bill 12 to ensure every student feels seen, safe, and supported
We at GSA Network are standing firm against Texas Senate Bill 12, a law that attempts to erase and silence the identities of LGBTQIA+ students. Together with Students Engaged in Advancing Texas (SEAT), a teacher, and a student and her parent, we have filed a federal lawsuit challenging this unconstitutional law.
Senate Bill 12 bans student organizations based on sexual orientation or gender identity, prohibits discussions and programs related to race, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and restricts educators from supporting students’ social transitions. These provisions infringe upon the First and Fourteenth Amendments and the Equal Access Act. We are fighting to ensure that all students, regardless of their identity, have the right to feel seen, safe, and supported in their schools.
Our mission remains steadfast: trans, queer, and Two-Spirit youth exist in Texas, belong in Texas, and have the right to self-determine their futures in Texas. We will not be legislated out of existence.
