Key Accomplishments

GSA Network has gained national recognition as a leader in TQ2S+ youth organizing, particularly in communities of color, with a proven track record of achieving systemic change. Since our founding in 1998, we have:

  • Shifted national narratives on bias-based bullying away from punitive discipline toward alternative models that keep LGBTQ+ youth in schools, working with education justice allies to eliminate or limit willful defiance policies
  • Advanced transgender rights in schools through TRUTH, our gender justice campaign that counters negative messaging about transgender and gender nonconforming youth
  • Expanded our reach to engage LGBTQ+ youth of color and low-income youth in rural regions through GSA Network Southeast and GSA Network Midwest
  • Grew California’s GSA Network from 40 clubs to more than 1,100 clubs and now provide training and support to approximately 18,000 youth activists and organizers annually
  • Passed 11 key laws protecting LGBTQ+ youth in California schools, including the landmark School Success and Opportunity Act of 2013
  • Founded the National Association of GSA Networks in 2005, uniting statewide organizations across 22 states to accelerate the GSA movement nationwide and connect local efforts to national racial and gender justice campaigns
  • Developed a replicable model of youth-led social justice organizing to address racial and gender justice in schools, successfully implemented in New Mexico, Texas, and Washington DC
