On Saturday, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 1540, which allows the state to adopt a new framework for public schools' social science and history coursework. Why does this matter for GSA activists?
It means that California can update instructional materials now to include the history of LGBT people and people with disabilities! Under previous law, the California Board of Education had to wait until 2015 before updating lessons -- meaning that, even though the FAIR Education Act is law, it was up to individual school districts to use supplemental materials to teach LGBT and disability history. Now, California can update its statewide lesson materials!
In the meantime, check out our FAIR resource page to make sure your school is following the FAIR Education Act.
