Yami (she/xyr/elle) is a gender-fluid Latiné high schooler from Chicago, IL. Yami’s leadership roles in organizations are focused on the advancement of immigrant, queer, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) youth. Specifically, she is involved with the Coalition of Advocates for Undocumented Students’ Education to research opportunities and resources for undocumented youth and implement projects addressing any social barriers they face. In Yami’s position with Illinois Safe School Alliance, (a chapter of GSA Network), xe partakes in the implementation of projects to advocate for inclusive and safe schools for LGBTQIA+ students throughout the state. Being a member of the GSA Network Board of Directors gives xyr an insight into how non-profit organizations function on the inside, which benefits her advocacy work and career development.
