GSA Network congratulates our colleagues at the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance who championed a safe schools bill that just became law in Illinois. On June 27, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law Senate Bill 3266, the Prevent School Violence Act, which defines bullying for the first time in Illinois law and explicitly prohibits bullying based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, as well as other personal characteristics. The bill also establishes the Illinois School Bullying Prevention Task Force.
The Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, which runs the Illinois GSA Network, has been working for over 12 years with the Illinois state legislature to address bullying prevention through the law. Finally their hard work has paid off. The new law is a critical step forward for the thousands of youth in schools across Illinois who deserve to attend safe schools where their administrators and teachers protect them from bullying and violence.
