San Francisco, CA – Gay-Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network), the national youth leadership organization that empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and ally youth to create safer schools, has appointed Benson D. Wong as the organization’s interim executive director. Carolyn Laub, the organization’s founding executive director, began a three-month sabbatical earlier in June.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ben to support GSA Network’s continued growth, life-changing programs, and national leadership around issues of educational justice for LGBT youth,” said Andrew Uehling, chair of GSA Network’s Board of Directors. “With his deep expertise in nonprofit management and background in social justice issues impacting young people, we are excited for the leadership and perspective Ben will bring to this powerful youth-driven organization.”
Wong, who brings over a decade of nonprofit management experience in the fields of youth development, afterschool programming, and community organizing, will begin his new role immediately at GSA Network’s headquarters in San Francisco.
“As someone who has worked with and advocated extensively for young people who have been pushed out of school and into the juvenile justice system, I am honored to have this opportunity to build upon GSA Network’s phenomenal record of empowering LGBT youth to transform their schools and push back against all forms of oppression,” said Wong.
From 2001-2009, Wong was the director of the landmark San Francisco Chinatown Beacon Center, serving thousands of youth and families with out-of-school time programs and services. More recently, he served as interim executive director of Wu Yee Children’s Services, and has established an independent consulting business, Community Collaborative Consulting.
