Remembering Lawrence King

A DAY OF ACTION AGAINST VIOLENCE IN OUR SCHOOLS

Who was Lawrence King?

Lawrence King was openly gay and gender nonconforming eighth-grader at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California who was shot and killed by a fellow student, 14-year-old Brandon McInerney, on February 12, 2008.

Although the exact reasons that Brandon shot Lawrence are not clear, students at E.O. Green Junior High say that Lawrence asked Brandon to be his Valentine. On February 12th, Brandon brought a gun to school and in the middle of class, shot Lawrence. Lawrence died two days later.

On the anniversary of his shooting, February 12th, we celebrate Lawrence King’s life and call for an end to violence against LGBTQ students in our schools.

How can you remember Lawrence King?

On February 12th students across the state and across the country hold actions or vigils to stand against violence in schools.  You can too!
